Eat selenium to lower cancer risk
Brazil nuts, broccoli, chia seeds, brown rice, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, shell fish… they’re all rich in selenium. And selenium has been proven to be a cancer fighting micronutrient as per a joint study conducted by Newcastle University,UK, the International Agency for research on Cancer (IARC-WHO) and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. As per this, higher levels of selenium are associated with a decreased risk of colorectal cancer.
Selenium is an essential micronutrient for human health but due to differing soil levels and resultant food content, there is great geographical variation in dietary selenium intake worldwide. As a result, the selenium status of many populations, including those across Europe, is low compared with much of North America. In the joint study, as little as 200 mcg of selenium was beneficial in lowering the risk of colorectal cancer. Selenium’s cancer fighting capabilities can be applied to other categories of cancer as well. Earlier studies have also shown that intake of selenium reduces the risk of diabetes in men.
